Teaching Mr. First-Born how to read has been a tough mission for me. Somehow he suddenly has the motivation to learn now, whereas I struggled for months to get him interested. He is a late bloomer, but it’s late than ever never.
I could not sleep the other night, and was up until five in the morning. In between the toss and turn, I scoured Youtube for videos of how to teach kids of his age to read. Just watching those few videos and learning some techniques truly help me to prepare to teach him the right way; the way that makes sense for him. Thanks for the world of sharing from other veterans, or else I would be stuck with frustration.
Today was our first day learning to read phonetically. It took him just a simple few words to begin with and somehow there was a light sparkling from his eyes — he understood, he got it! It was like there was a light switch buried deep somewhere in his mind telling him that is not as hard as he thought.
in deep thinking of the words he wanted to ensemble.
looking at the cluster of consonants to match the vowels.
finally he put together the letters, sounded them out, and read the word that he formed.
Our high-five of triumph!
